Julie Small (PMHNP/BC)
I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner with over 10 years of experience working with adults in outpatient mental health clinics. I perform comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnose, recommend treatment, and when appropriate, prescribe medication in treating a wide range of mental health and brain disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, ADHD, and intellectual/developmental disabilities. As mental health disorders can have their origin in biological and psychological factors, medication management may be one modality in your treatment. I also recommend individual therapy, DBT group therapy, EMDR, healthy eating habits, and various forms of exercise including yoga and Thai Chi.
I worked as a registered nurse for over 30 years prior to going back to school to complete my master’s degree in psychiatric nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I count it a privilege and a blessing to work together with a client to choose the best fit of treatments in the process of building a life worth living.
Although we are originally from Kentucky, my husband and I have lived in the New Hanover County area since 1990 with a brief 3 years spent in Minneapolis, Minnesota. North Carolina was calling us back! I enjoy spending time outdoors, walking and gardening. I also like reading fiction, practicing yoga, and spending time with friends and our family; 3 sons, 2 daughter in laws, and 5 grandchildren.
