My name is Richard Brice. I was born and raised in a small village in a snowbelt area of New Your State – the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Childhood was a good one – I felt safe, secure and loved. Dad worked on the railroad and Mom did washing and cleaning for some of the folks in town. After attending schools in the village, I attended college and left college due to depression. I was drafted and deployed to Vietnam. After three years, I was honorarily discharged and finished college with a BA in sociology at Lemoyne college in Syracuse, NY. I earned a master’s degree in Social Work at Syracuse University and have worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker/Psychotherapist, both in New York state and North Carolina.
The clients that I see have a number of different mental health issues including sadness and depression, nervousness/anxiety, adjustment disorder, personality traits and disorders, intense shifts in moods, difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, relationship conflict/dysfunction.
I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or Rogerian person centered therapy in my work with clients. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a goal oriented form of talk therapy that helps a client manage mental health issues by changing some of the way that they are thinking and behaving. CBT focuses on feelings, thoughts, and behaviors and how changing one can improve the others. Rogerian psychotherapy is a person centered therapy, a humanistic approach psychotherapy where I guide the client in exploring their own thoughts and feelings which will ultimately lead to self-discovery and positive change.
