John E. Lothes II, M.A., L.P.A. – I attended Shepherd University (Shepherdstown, W.V.), played soccer for Shepherd and received my B.A. in psychology. While at Shepherd I worked for the WV Children’s Home Society and continued with them for a year after graduation. After working for the WVCHS, I decided to further my education and attended UNC Wilmington for graduate school. I graduated with an M.A. in Clinical Psychology (concentration in Substance Abuse Treatment) from UNCW. I also have a MPH (concentration in Community and Behavioral Health) and an Ed.D. from UNCW in Education Leadership and Administration.
At Delta Behavioral Health helped run the Partial Hospital Program; the Intensive Outpatient Program; and weekly Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) groups for roughly 10 years until 2017. In 2017, I took a full-time position at UNCW. In our programs, we help many people develop a life worth living. Whether we are dealing with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse or just learning to deal effectively with the daily stressors of life, we can help. I continue to see individual clients at Delta Behavioral Health. Most of my practice is now virtual due to being full time at UNCW.
I teach wellness and physical activity courses and psychology courses at UNCW. I do research at UNCW on mindfulness in a variety of contexts, executive functioning/ADHD, student health and wellness, how DBT in PHP and IOP programs effect clinical outcomes and occasionally some sports psychology projects.
I would say in my free time, I train aikido and Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ), and who really has “free” time. I currently hold the rank of Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) in Aikido and 1st degree black belt in BJJ and am the founder and faculty advisor to the UNCW aikido club. Along with my training I have traveled throughout the country to train and teach self-defense seminars.
